What is trochanteric bursitis?

Trochanteric bursitis occurs when the bursa - a small fluid-filled sac that cushions the tissues around the hip joint - becomes inflamed. This condition is one of the most common causes of pain on the outer side of the hip.

It can develop due to repetitive movement, injury, overuse, poor biomechanics, or age-related wear and tear.

Common symptoms include:

Pain on the outside of the hip
Tenderness when touching the hip
Pain when walking, climbing stairs, or exercising
Discomfort when lying on the affected side
Stiffness and reduced mobility
