What is plantar fasciitis?

The plantar fascia is a thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot, connecting the heel bone to the toes. Its role is to support the arch of the foot and absorb the stresses of daily movement. When this tissue becomes irritated or inflamed, it can result in plantar fasciitis. Many patients describe the pain as feeling like a stabbing sensation in the heel, particularly after periods of rest.

Common symptoms include:

Sharp pain in the heel
Pain when taking the first steps in the morning
Discomfort after prolonged standing
Pain following exercise or activity
Tenderness along the bottom of the foot
