Dr Gary Peiser

Dr Gary Peiser was born in Hermanus and studied medicine at University of Cape Town (MBChB). He completed his internship at Rob Ferreira Hospital in Mbombela, Mpumalanga, and served his community service in his hometown of Hermanus. His first job after community service was in Skukuza, which is the main camp of the Kruger National Park. He ran a private general practice for the locals of the Kruger and also attended to the medical needs of the visitors to the park, including any emergencies that arose. He then left the Kruger to pursue a career in Radiology.

He worked as a medical officer in Radiology at Grey’s Hospital in Pietermaritzburg for one year before being accepted into the Radiology registrar program at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. Dr Peiser obtained his Masters in Diagnostic Radiology (MMed, WITS) during his registrar time and received his Radiology degree from the College of Diagnostic Radiologists (FC Rad Diag SA) in 2021.

His first consultant post was at Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital in Johannesburg. He was accepted into a fellowship program in Pediatric Interventional Radiology at SickKids Hospital in Toronto through the University of Toronto. This is the largest pediatric hospital in Canada and a major referral center. In addition to general pediatric interventional radiology training, he also gained specialized training in sclerotherapy of vascular malformations. After his fellowship Dr Peiser returned to Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital to implement an interventional radiology service. He is very involved in academics and educational training for radiology registrars.

Dr Gary Peiser has been honored as the second recipient of the Professor Steve Beningfield Fellowship in South Africa. He is currently working at Groote Schuur Hospital (GSH) and the University of Cape Town Private Academic (UCTPAH) in Observatory, Cape Town, under the mentorship of Dr Dale Creamer, current head of department of Interventional Radiology at GSH and founding director of Cape Town Interventional Radiology.

Dr Peiser is friendly, outgoing and loves connecting with his patients. He is a nature lover and loves spending his free time hiking and exploring the beautiful landscapes of South Africa.
