Dr Jateel Kassim

Dr Jateel Kassim was born at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital in Soweto, Johannesburg and grew up in Durban, KwaZulu Natal. He completed his medical degree at the University of Cape Town (UCT) and worked in a variety of medical roles including research medicine at the South African Tuberculosis Vaccine Initiative (SATVI) linked to the Institute of Infectious Disease and Molecular Medicine (IDM) and UCT.

He later specialized in Radiology at his alma mater (UCT) in 2024. His late father, Dr Bharat Kumar Kassim, a fellow radiologist, was his idol and inspiration to pursue this career, and particularly the field of interventional radiology. At UCT he was fortunate enough to train under the esteemed Professor Steve Beningfield, who established and revolutionized high level interventional radiology, particularly in the hepatobiliary sphere at UCT.

He has been honored as the first Interventional Radiology Fellow in South Africa, aptly named after Professor Beningfield. He is currently working at Groote Schuur Hospital (GSH) and the University of Cape Town Private Academic (UCTPAH) in Observatory, Cape Town, under the mentorship of Dr Dale Creamer, current head of department of Interventional Radiology at GSH and founding director of Cape Town Interventional Radiology.

His vision for health care in South Africa is patient-centered evidence-based medicine that is accessible and equitable to the people of South Africa. Dr Kassim is particularly excited to be working in the field of interventional radiology which is at the cutting edge of medicine and represents the future of health care globally.

Outside of work, Dr Jateel values quality family time and traveling with his wife and beautiful young daughter. He is also a keen social footballer, action cricketer and padel player. He is an advanced scuba diver with a strong history of swimming and water polo for which he received his provincial and national colors respectively.
